SPRINGFIELD – Today, Governor JB Pritzker issued the following statement following the passage of the Children's Online Social Media Safety Act to force big tech to implement measures to keep kids safe on social media:

“While big tech abandons its responsibility to keep our kids safe online, Illinois has stepped in to force them to.

“Any time we send our children off to school or the playground, we take precautions to keep them safe — from strangers, environmental dangers, and anything else that might put them in harm’s way. Parents and families should have full confidence that the same protections exist to keep their kids protected online. I am proud the Illinois General Assembly passed the Children’s Online Social Media Safety Act, marking an important milestone in our efforts to improve kids’ safety and privacy online, mitigate the harmful effects of social media on mental and physical health, and prevent financial scamming. I look forward to signing this bill into law and continuing our work with parents, educators, and caregivers across the state to protect our kids online.”
