Gov. Pritzker Releases Statement on Passage of SB3463
May 25, 2024
Springfield— Governor JB Pritzker released the following statement in response to passage of amendments to the Juvenile Court Act:
"The passage of SB3463 by the Illinois General Assembly is a strong step towards creating a more equitable juvenile justice system across our State. With this measure, we join 22 other states in making expungement proceedings easier for young people navigating the juvenile court systems. Rather than being required to request and attend expungement proceedings after their adjudication and sentence has been completed, the court will schedule the expungement date when the sentence ends or when a young person is sent to the Department of Juvenile Justice. This will allow both greater flexibility and more precision, so that the judge has the most information about the young person’s future eligibility when they set that court date and reduce the likelihood of multiple court dates having to be scheduled. Now those juveniles who forget to seek expungement after their adjudication and sentence has been completed will be helped by having their expungement automatically being put on the call.
Thank you to Senator Robert Peters and Representative Justin Slaughter for spearheading this effort, which will open doors for many young Illinoisans as they transition into their communities with a clean slate and opportunities for growth."
